The z4 is bmw’s take on the classic sports convertible—fast, great fun to drive, and really designed more for driving on the open road than for extreme luxury. It’s considerably cheaper than most of its high-end competitors and handles impeccably, as one would expect from a member of the bmw stable. This is, above all, an automobile for the countryside, for hairpins and mountain roads, and for indecently fast drives on wide country roads. The suspension comes into its own, helping produce a lively but stable ride. I was especially impressed with the car’s agility in very tight corners, a product of its relatively small size and first-rate steering. The car is always controlled, very sure footed and looks after inexperienced drivers. The learning curve is relatively short here, which makes this a nice choice for a beginning sports car driver. Above all, the z4 is easy for the average driver to drive aggressively, which increases the fun level dramatically. As i drove back to the lot, i swept through wide corners on a two-lane highway singing aloud at the joy of it all. Z4s are not the cheapest convertibles on the market, but their durability and sheer driving qualities make them a wonderful long-term investment in driving fun. It’s also a nicely calibrated, surprisingly rapid beast for those who like to play, and play seriously, on the road. In an era when so much emphasis is placed on automobile “amenities”, it’s nice to drive a car that puts driving first, other things lower on the list. This very nice sports car will appeal to drivers of all ages, who appreciate high performance and superb handling, which is what bmws are all about.
