In their wisdom, the mazda folks changed the name of the third generation of their beloved roadster from miata to mx-5 with the third generation in 2006, but its many enthusiastic owners still call it by the original name, thank goodness. Born twenty-six years ago, the lightweight roadster hit a lot of peoples’ funny bones and has become an icon of traditional two-seater virtues, harking back to the mgs and other such classic vehicles of yesteryear. I drove a 2009 example with a phrt, “power retractable hardtop”. Traditionally these take up a great deal of trunk room, but ingenious mazda engineers solved the problem so that it takes up about the same space as a retracted soft top. The example i drove had automatic transmission with a manual mode and paddles on the steering wheel. This being a miata, i spent almost all my time in manual, which is when the car sings eagerly. But 0 to 60 in about 7 seconds is fine for a small car like this, and i enjoyed my time at the wheel enormously. It’s supremely easy to drive. The seats are comfortable and the engine has a nice sound that hints that it wants to play, which it does with great panache. It’s all very straightforward. This is a car for average drivers to take on sprightly adventures, whether it is in the mountains, on california highway 1 around big sur, or in the sierras. I found myself cornering at indecent speeds with complete composure. This is a roadster for average drivers, who want to have fun and have no interest in very expensive, and indeed fast, sports cars or muscle machines. AM/FM✔ Leather Seats✔ Bluetooth
