2008 Porsche 911 C-4S, 50k miles, Full Leather, Power seat pkg. Let me admit it at once. Any time Len hands me a Porsche, I go on my special route. Definitely a special time, for there’s really something distinctive about any Porsche. And the 4s is right at the top of my list. Equipped with a 355-hp, 3.8-liter flat six, the Carrera 4S is a lot of people’s dream car. The cabin is a trifle austere, as is common in German automobiles. I started off by commuting in thick traffic, where the 4S behaved admirably. When traveling with the crowd, I stayed in automatic, which was a wise choice, so I could concentrate on surrounding traffic, using the throttle to seize strategic gaps—and to get out of the way of idiots (in small Japanese sedans and pickups), who wanted to race me. On the freeway, the car is magnificent and commendably quiet in sixth gear at cruising speeds, with acceleration that’s matched by few others on the road. About 4.2 seconds for 0 to 60 is impressive in any company. But, alas, it was not to be, so I just enjoyed the nice Bose stereo and the fresh air. But please, dear reader, put the car into sport manual and head for the hills. Use the pedals on the steering wheel and play. Fast gear changes were exquisite, the acceleration out of even extreme corners fast, immediate, and controlled. Passing rapidly through slaloms was positively yummy. When I pushed the 4S, it stuck to the pavement like glue, with a reassuring poise that’s one of the car’s most attractive qualities for the average driver. This is a driver’s car, but the great attraction of the 4S for many average drivers is that it is reassuring and easy to drive. Despite the cries of outrage from 911 fanatics when porsche introduced the cayenne, history has proved them wrong—very wrong. Cayennes and macans have become the bestsellers in the porsche range. At first, they raised eyebrows. Now they’re commonplace. Solidly built, comfortable, and versatile, they’ve become the favorites of affluent suburban soccer moms, and many others. No question, there’s something special about a porsche, which the manufacturer has managed to build into an suv that was not intended as a sports car. Yet it handles almost like one. This example that i drove was the base v-6 model. The power plant develops 300 hp and is said (by porsche) to go from 0 to 60 in 6. 3 seconds. The day when i drove it was one of those messy ones complete with light rain and mud, so, alas, i couldn’t open the car up. The exquisite interior more than compensated for the lack of a speed test. The touchscreen is functional and easy to use. I sunk into the adjustable driver’s seat and delighted in the comfort. The steering wheel is exceptionally nice and the driving position adjustable for almost any need. Basic cayennes are excellent urban cars, with, however, small side mirrors that take some getting used to. In dense traffic, i eased along comfortably, with enough acceleration if i needed it. I took the cayenne into the mountains, knowing that the standard all-wheel drive would keep me out of trouble on wet, muddy roads. The handling among the soggy twisties was always calm and relaxed. The steering can only be described as precise and sublime. When confronted with the remnants of mud slides and deeper standing water, the cayenne just shrugged and went on its way. This very comfortable and well-designed automobile will appeal to a broad range of owners looking for a top-quality suv. Into the bargain, it’s a porsche. There are more performance-oriented versions of the cayenne out there, but this well-equipped example is ideal for most drivers, who don’t want to pay a premium price for more performance.
